08/04/2009
Philip Kennedy of Year 14 has been placed on the short-list for the highly prestigious Catherine Judge Award.
This award was founded by the Bank of Ireland in memory of the late Catherine Judge, someone who passionately wished to encourage young musicians. Any exceptional young solo musician who has achieved a grade 8 in their board examinations and who wishes to pursue the sudy of music in third level education is eligible to apply. Philip, as you can read elsewhere on this site by clicking on News and Events on the top menu bar, achieved the highest grade 8 mark in Ireland for his singing and, in so doing, won the Philip F. Walsh Memorial Award presented by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
The final will be held in the Great Hall of Queen's University on Saturday 18th April at 12 noon. All nominees will have to perform a ten minute recital in front of a very distinguished panel of judges, chaired by Barry Douglas, pianist and founder of Camerata Ireland, and including David Brophy, the Principal Conductor of the RTE Concert Orchestra, Eibhlis Farrell, composer and member of An Toscaireacht, the govening body of Aosdana, the Academy of Creative Arts in Ireland, Neil Martin, composer and producer, and Una Hunt, one of Ireland's leading pianists. The prize is £5000.
Even to be nominated is a triumph and Philip is to be warmly congratulated for what he has achieved through his talent and hard work. The School wishes him good luck!
