Success in the GCSE Examinations

The School has continued to improve its performance at GCSE. 96% of the boys gained seven passes at grade C and above; all are to be commended for their hard work. Special congratulations to James Geddis, Philip McKeown and Jonathon Simpson, each of whom gained ten A* grades. Well done, boys!

A Level Exam Success...

At A2, 70% of the boys achieved three C grades or better. Of our subject entries, 71% were at A* - B. 18 achieved straight A grades at A2, with 6 of these achieving 4 and one 5. Pride of place must go to Stephen Geddis, who gained four A* grades and full marks in 16 of the 24 modules he sat over both AS and A2, Bryn Morris who had three A*s and Alasdair Winter who achieved five grade As, two of them starred. Stephen is going to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge to read Natural Sciences while Bryn and Alasdair are going to St Andrew’s to read Chemistry with Maths and Physics respectively. read more

BGS Gains International School Award

The School has just received news from the British Council  that it has been granted the International School Award, accredited for three years, from 1 September 2010 to 31 August 2013. This follows more than two years of work developing a portfolio of evidence under the leadership and co-ordination of Senior Teacher, Dean Robinson. Many of our academic departments now have links with schools in France, Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain, Poland, New Zealand, the USA, Kenya and Qatar. The award will allow the School to display the International Schools' logo on its prospectus, stationery and website.

Congratulations are owed to all teachers and pupils who have been involved in the work and especially  Mr Robinson, to whom we offer good wishes as he takes up his new role as Vice-principal of Down High School.

New School Development Given the Green LIght

On Thursday 5 August, the Minister of Education, Ms Caitriona Ruane, announced to our mingled astonishment and delight, that Bangor Grammar School, with twelve other primary and post-primary schools, had finally been allocated the funding to build its new school. After eight years of hard work and some disappointments, this was a great boost to our morale. It means that the first pupils will walk through the doors of the completed school at the beginning of 2013.

Much hard work lies ahead and, indeed, has already begun. The present College Avenue site will be placed on the market almost immediately; although we shall not be moving until 2013, the sale is very important to the funding of the project. The design and project mangement team is  putting things in place to pick up the threads of the project put on hold back in January and important meetings are under way. It is hoped to appoint a contractor and start work on site towards the end of January 2011.
