150th Anniversary
Bangor Grammar School celebrated its 150th anniversary during the 2006/07 school year and held a number of major events to mark the occasion.
The programme kicked off in October 2006 with a hugely successful concert performed entirely by past and present pupils which filled the Waterfront Hall (for more information click here, Photo Gallery). A truly great night was had by all which further enhanced the reputation of the school’s music department and long musical tradition.
A tremendous sports weekend involving several hundred former pupils took place between May 25-27 20007 and included a cricket match between the school and an MCC XI, a charity sports dinner and auction, and a charity golf outing on May 27. The events involved many who have gone on to represent their country at the highest national and international levels.
The main civic events held were a church service at Bangor Parish on February 4 2007 and an invitational gala dinner on March 22 2007 which Sir Ken Bloomfield attended as guest of honour.
The anniversary programme had an international dimension and impact through the Abaana Project. which involved a group of senior boys and staff travelling to Uganda in July 2007 to help with the construction of a new school.
Other events included the design and production of a special mosaic sited in the town and the erection of a plaque marking the site of the original school in Main Street.
