Subject Curriculum

The main aims of the department are to develop a range of skills and design knowledge including graphical communication, electronics, mechanisms, computer control, materials and processes.
The skills and knowledge are developed through a wide range of practical based projects.

Key Stage 3

Year 8

The main emphasis in Year 8 is to develop knowledge of materials and their working properties and a range of manufacturing skills.
The projects include
• A Mini Light
• A mechanical Wooden Crane
• A multi material Coat Hook
• A Motorised Car

Year 9

In Year 9 the emphasis is towards electronics, computer control and mechanisms along with the continued development of manufacturing skills.
The projects include
• A Moisture Detector
• A Crocodile Cam Toy

Year 10

In Year 10 there is further study of electronics and a greater emphasis on design and graphical skills including the use of ICT.
The projects include
• A School Bag Alarm
• A Techno-throw Challenge
• A Computer Control Module

GCSE & A-Level

At this stage of studies there is a much greater emphasis on design, materials, industrial manufacturing, use of ICT, systems and control.
These courses include coursework where students must identify a technological design problem and produce a product or system to meet the requirements of the problem.

In addition the pupils have been involved in the F1 for schools project and the Audi Young engineer.

Last year for the first time pupils studying for their a levels entered drawings in the F G Wilson sponsored Solid works competition which saw Kyle Loughlin coming 3rd overall and David Proctor receiving a commendation for his efforts.
