Subject Curriculum
Learning for Life and Work (LLW) is a discrete learning area in the revised curriculum. It is taught to each class by their form teacher. LLW seeks to allow pupils to develop their potential in all aspects of their lives. It is about values, attitudes and skills, considering the holistic development of the individual and not just its knowledge content. LLW helps provide young people with knowledge and skills to make informed choices and decisions throughout their lives, allowing them to become confident responsible citizens.
There are four strands to Key Stage 3 LLW each subdivided into Key Concepts.
Local and Global Citizenship Strand
- The range and extent of diversity in societies locally and globally.
- Human rights and social responsibilities of individuals and groups in a democratic society.
- Equality and social justice.
- Democratic processes and institutions and their role in promoting inclusion, justice and democracy.
Employability Strand
- The global economy and Northern Ireland, it’s implications for personal career planning.
- Career Management – lifelong learning, updating knowledge and skills, self marketing and effective personal career planning.
- Enterprise and entrepreneurship.
Home Economics Strand
- Healthy eating
- Home and family life
- Independent living
Personal Development Strand
- Self awareness, the importance of self confidence and self esteem.
- Personal health, recognising and managing factors that may influence emotional, physical and mental health.
- Relationships, the importance of forming and maintaining relationships.
Each year group within the school study elements of these strands during their timetabled LLW periods.
