150th Anniversary Celebrations

Bangor Grammar School is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and has been organising a number of major events to mark the occasion.

The programme kicked off in October with a hugely successful concert performed entirely by past and present pupils which filled the Waterfront Hall (for more information click here, Photo Gallery). A truly great night was had by all which further enhanced the reputation of the school’s music department and long musical tradition.

A tremendous sports weekend involving several hundred former pupils is scheduled for May 25-27.  The weekend will inlcude events such as:

  • a cricket match between the school and an MCC XI on May25
  • a charity sports dinner and auction on May 26
  • a charity golf outing on May 27.

These events will involve many who have gone on to represent their country at the highest national and international levels.  TV commitments in USA will prevent golf legend David Feherty from attending but he will be contributing items to the auction. This should boost proceedings from the weekend with all the profits going to a local charity.

The main civic events will be:

  • a church service at Bangor Parish on February 4 at 3pm (for more information click here)
  • an invitational gala dinner on March 22 - a warm welcome is extended to anyone wishing to attend the church service

The anniversary programme will have an international dimension and impact through the Abaana Project. This will involve a group of senior boys and staff travelling to Uganda in July to help with the construction of a new school.

Other events will include the design and production of a special mosaic to be sited in the town and the erection of a plaque marking the site of the original school in Main Street.
Further details on any of the events can be obtained from the school.
