Years 8 - 10

In Bangor Grammar we are committed to teaching basic ICT skills to our pupils. The purpose of this is to familiarise pupils with several of the main software packages that are in use today both in education and in the business world. Pupils will also learn how to use various items of ICT equipment and will be taught how to use the Internet as an effective research tool.

ICT facilities in BGS

We have a broad range of ICT facilities in Bangor Grammar:

  • A network of over 100 computers spanning two computer suites and the Library. There are also separate networks in the Business Studies and Technology Departments.
  • The computers are multimedia PC’s allowing pupils to use informative and interesting multimedia software.
  • Connection to the Internet giving pupils the opportunity to research projects, etc. using the World Wide Web.
  • Scanners and digital cameras which allow students to import images into the computer for incorporation into assignments, homework, etc.
  • Each suite has a laser printer and Interactive Whiteboard and has access to a colour printer.
  • Every boy has his own private user area within the network to safely store work and has access to the Internet and email.
  • Access to a range of curriculum based software when needed by subject areas.

ICT in Key Stage 3

In Junior School, Year 8 pupils will have a double period where ICT will be taught as a discrete subject. In the discrete ICT classes pupils will become familiar with the following areas of ICT:

  • Microsoft Word - word-processing skills
  • Microsoft Excel – using spreadsheets
  • Microsoft PowerPoint – presentation software
  • Microsoft Publisher – desktop publishing
  • Effective use of the Internet for research
  • Basic Web Design

This is followed up by a further period of ICT in Year 10 which seeks to develop the ICT skills pupils have developed.

These ICT classes are supplemented by the use of ICT in the teaching and learning of the other subject areas during the course of their normal curriculum. Subject teachers can book the ICT suites for their classes to use these facilities to further their knowledge of the various subject areas.

Outside of the curriculum teaching there are a number of after school activities held in both of the ICT suites. For example, French ICT, After School Homework Club (ICT) and Computer Club.
