Subject Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Pupils in year 8 study combined science for 5 periods per week. The objective in year 8 is to build upon pupils’ Key Stage 2 experience, allowing them to develop a clear understanding of what ‘Science’ is and ensuring they can undertake scientific investigation in a fair and safe manner.

In years 9 and 10 pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects. Each science is allocated 2 periods per week and is taught by a subject specialist.

GCSE

All pupils are required to study at least one science subject for GCSE. At present the school offers Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate sciences.

Physics students follow the Northern Ireland CCEA Physics specification, which is studied for 4 periods per week in years 11 and 12. In the summer term of year 12 pupils sit 2 examination papers. These papers contribute 75% to their final mark. The remaining 25% is achieved through a piece of coursework, which is completed by each pupil in the autumn term of year 12.

Advanced Level

Physics is a popular choice amongst our year 13, AS students. It builds on the knowledge already gained in GCSE Physics and encourages a more rigorous approach to individual study. Many pupils decide to carry the course on into year 14 in order to gain the full A2 qualification.

The Physics department offers the Northern Ireland CCEA Physics specification.

In both year 13 and year 14, Physics is allocated 9 periods per week and the teaching is split between 2 subject specialists. Year 13 pupils complete 3 modules, which are examined in the summer term. Year 14 pupils also complete 3 modules, one of which is examined in January, with the remaining 2 modules examined in the summer term. Part of the examination process for both year groups involves a formal practical examination.
