Subject Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Pupils in year 8 study combined science. The objective in year 8 is to build on pupils’ Key Stage 2 experience, to allow pupils develop a clear understanding of what ‘Science’ is and to ensure they can undertake scientific investigation in a fair and safe manner. In years 9 and 10 Pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects.

GCSE

Pupils study one or more of the separate Sciences. The department follows the CCEA GCSE Chemistry specification, subject code 1110. All pupils are normally entered for the Higher Tier. This course provides a thorough preparation for the study of Chemistry and related courses at GCE Advanced Level for AS and A2. The course develops understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of Chemistry, as well as the environmental, technological, ethical, cultural and social issues relating to the subject. In their final year, pupils sit two public exams worth 75% of the total marks. Experimental skills are assessed internally through investigative work which contributes the final 25% of marks.

Advanced Level

The department follows the CCEA specification for AS/A2 Chemistry.
Exams at AS:
1. Module 3 Practical exam (2 ½ h) in May
2. Modules 1 and 2 Theory papers (90 min) in June
Exams at A2:

2. Module 6A coursework consisting of 4 practicals, written up as reports, which are carried out throughout the year.
3. Module 5 Theory paper (90 min) in June
