Curriculum

Years 8-10

All pupils in Years 8-10 have 2 Music classes per week with a strong practical basis. Through listening, composing and performing pupils encounter a wide range of musical styles, and pupils are very much encouraged to pursue and develop their own personal musical interests. Class sizes are small to facilitate practical work.

Years 11-14

The subject is a popular option for GCSE, AS and A2 levels, where results are consistently excellent. We use the CCEA specification as a basis for our teaching, and this allows for considerable flexibility in pupil options. Pupils can thus play to their musical strengths, and do very well, while developing their own areas of musical interest.

ICT

Pupils make use of a wide range of music technology. PCs are used for sequencing, score writing, aural and theory training, while Boss and Yamaha portable studios used for recording pupils’ composition work. There are over 30 individual electronic keyboards in daily use. We will upgrading our provision for music technology extensively within the next few months, which will result in us being one of the leading centres for Music Technology in Northern Ireland.

Co-curricular Music

In the pursuit of musical excellence, a large number of activities complement the delivery of the compulsory music curriculum. For full details, click here.

Beyond School

A significant number of pupils go on to study Music at university or Music College, including Oxbridge, with many going on to follow careers in which Music plays a significant role.
